About the role

The vehicle is becoming more intelligent, connected, and defined by software. This is one of the most significant transformations in automotive history, and Visteon is helping lead it. We create the digital cockpit, AI-powered software, and software-defined vehicle platforms that bring the next generation of mobility to life. Across 17 countries, our 10,000+ innovators work in close partnership with the world's leading automakers to transform breakthrough ideas into production-ready solutions for passenger, commercial and two-wheeler markets. What we build reaches millions of drivers worldwide. Mission of the Role: The Mechanical Design Technical Specialist provides advanced mechanical design expertise and technical leadership for automotive electronic control units (ECUs), instrument clusters, and display products. This role provides technical oversight of the development and leads the technical review of mechanical architectures, including module enclosures, thermal management, sealing, and PCB and display integration, from concept through production launch for a number of assigned development programs. The specialist reviews mechanical designs, drawings and CAD models; resolves cross-domain mechanical issues; contributes to controlled design standards and reusable solutions; and mentors mechanical engineers. The role works closely with electrical, display, optical, manufacturing, simulation, validation, and program teams, as well as customers and tooling suppliers. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role focused on advanced mechanical engineering, technical decision support, design quality, and capability development rather than direct people management. Key objectives of this role: Technical lead and design reviewer for: Mechanical design of ECU and display enclosures and housings, including injection-molded thermoplastic, thixo-moulded, die-cast, and stamped/formed metal constructions, from concept through to tooling kickoff and production release. Thermal design: heatsink geometry, thermal interface material (TIM) and gap-filler selection and application, conduction/convection paths, and mechanical provisions for heat dissipation; partner with thermal simulation to validate designs. Display mechanical integration, including cover lens/glass, optical bonding, bezels, TFT/backlight/touch-panel mounting. PCB-to-housing integration: board retention, alignment, support, strain relief, and interfaces to the electrical design team. Mechanical Design for EMC: Shielding, ESD robustness, EMC shields, clips, foam gaskets etc. in collaboration with EMC specialists. Develop and review sealing and ingress-protection solutions for specified IP ratings, using gaskets, O-rings, form-in-place seals, and breather or vent strategies; define mechanical verification needs and interpret the relevant test results. GD&T-based tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure fit, alignment, and assembly robustness across the product and its vehicle interfaces. Material selection against thermal, mechanical, flammability (UL 94), CTE, chemical resistance, and cost requirements; specify automotive-grade thermoplastics and metals. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA); collaborate with tooling and molding suppliers on tool design, mold-flow review, first articles, and PPAP. Work with customers to define mechanical architecture that meets environmental, cost, weight etc. targets. Lead and contribute to DFMEA, design reviews, and DV/PV validation planning; define mechanical test requirements and interpret results. Review structural, modal, random-vibration, shock, and drop FEA to confirm mechanical durability. Ensure compliance of designs with automotive environmental and mechanical standards and customer-specific OEM specifications. Establish mechanical design guidelines, standard practices, and reusable design solutions; provide technical mentorship and design review support to junior engineers. Support cost, mass, and manufacturability optimization across the product portfolio. Key Performance Indicators: This role directly affects engineering quality and cost, in-plant and in-field quality, validation test (DV and PV) first-time-through (FTT) and actual vs. target bill-of-material (BoM) and tooling cost metrics. Key Year-One Deliverables: Detailed design review reports for assigned programs. Go/No Go Engineering sign-off of drawings and tooling for assigned programs. Documentation of design guidelines, standard practices and reuseable design solutions. Structured problem-solving reports (8D, DMAIC etc.) where applicable. Desired Qualification, Experience and Skills: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent); Master's preferred. Experience with automotive in-vehicle environmental requirements and durability validation, including thermal cycling, thermal shock, vibration, mechanical shock, and ingress testing. Demonstrated mechanical design experience with automotive electronic control units (ECUs), in-vehicle displays, or comparable high-volume electromechanical products. Experience taking designs for high-volume manufacture through validation and into volume production. Demonstrated expertise designing injection-molded plastic and metal (diecast/stamped) enclosures for electronic products. Experience with thixo-moulding an advantage. Good understanding of 3D CAD, 2D engineering drawings, and the design and documentation of visible-surface and appearance-quality requirements. Expert application of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis. Strong proficiency in thermal management principles for electronics packaging. Working knowledge of mechanical design practices that support electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrostatic-discharge (ESD) robustness, including shielding interfaces, conductive contacts, clips, foams, and gaskets, in collaboration with EMC specialists. Demonstrated structured problem-solving experience using methods such as 8D, DMAIC, 5 Whys, or A3. Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification is preferred. Excellent communication skills in English. Experience and ability of delivering group training (e.g. train-the-trainer) preferred. Experience of high-voltage design (creepage and clearance) an advantage. Key Behaviors: Problem Solving: Ability to evaluate complex technical and organizational challenges and identify practical solutions. Critical Thinking: Strong analytical mindset with the ability to investigate issues, assess risks, and make informed decisions. Collaboration: Builds trusted relationships and effectively works across functions, regions, and cultures. Communication: Clearly conveys information and aligns stakeholders toward common objectives. Resilience: Adapts effectively to changing priorities and demonstrates perseverance in demanding situations. Team Leadership: Inspires, develops, and empowers individuals to achieve high performance and continuous growth. Reporting Structure: This is a CEO-3 level role, reporting to the Distinguished Technical Fellow for hardware and mechanical design. Location:Sofia, Bulgaria. Primarily office/lab-based with time in prototype build, test, and manufacturing environments. Occasional travel to other Visteon locations worldwide, customer sites, suppliers, and manufacturing facilities. In the fast lane of technology.
